  oyun, iki kardeş arasındaki trajik ilişkinin hikayesidir. kardeşlerden biri zengin, öteki yoksul. biri hayatta başarı kazanmış, öteki fakir kalmıştır. ama ikisi de verdikleri kararlar sonucu bir bedel ödemiştir. bir kardeş 1929 buhranı sırasında iflas etmiş babasına bakmak için öğrenimini yarıda kesmiş, polis olmuştur. öteki, evi bırakmış, başarılı bir doktor olmuş, ama sonra sinir buhranları geçirerek hastanelerde yatmıştır.
  miller bu oyununda toplumlardaki yanlış değer yargılarını ve suçluluk duygusunun insanları nasıl mutsuzluğa götürdüğünü anlatmıştır.
