  "the good the bad and the ugly was the final film in a trilogy of "american westerns" produced from an italian perspective, the result of a colloboration between united artists and rome's produzione europe association. the first production was entitled a fistful of dollars, and the second for a few dollars more. the slated movies created by alberto grimaldi, directed by sergio leone, and distributed by ua, became widely known as the "spaghetti westerns" and inspired an entire film subgenre which now includes nearly 200 movies.
  
  at the time the deal was made, clint eastwood was starring in tv's "rawhide". when he traveled to europe to begin shooting a fistful of dollars, he was paid only $15,000 to complete the movie. but the time the good, the bad and the ugly was shot, he was bringing in $250,000 per film and coping with international fame. the profits from the trilogy were enough for eastwood to creat his own production company and to direct its first feature, play misty for me.
  
  the spaghetti western became a reality following an italian film economic crisis which prohibited big-budget epics. the creative filmmakers of italy were drawn to the romance of the american western and the deep pockets of american studios."
